Rob Teilhet, Candidate for Attorney General

Profile of Rob Teilhet, Candidate for Attorney General

Rob Teilhet (pronounced tuh-lay) has represented Smyrna and Marietta in the Georgia House of Representatives since his election in 2002 at the age of 28. In his four terms in the legislature, he has earned the respect of Democrats, Republicans and independents for his hard work, honesty, and integrity.

Rob has a well-deserved reputation as a tough-on-crime legislator and a reliable supporter of law enforcement and crime victims as a member of the House Judiciary Committee. Rob passed legislation to expand background checks on people who work with children, the elderly and people with disabilities and has consistently supported tougher penalties for criminals and stronger protection for victims.

Rob is widely known as the strongest voice in the General Assembly for protecting Georgians from rip-offs and con artists. He's passed several laws that protect Georgians from identity theft, led the fight to stop the legalization of payday lending, and sponsored legislation to eliminate fraud in refund anticipation loans, marketed as “instant tax refunds.” Rob was named "Democrat of the Year" in 2007 by the Cobb County Democratic Committee and a “Friend of the Consumer” by Georgia Watch in honor of his work to protect Georgians from identity theft, predatory lending, and consumer fraud.

Rob is a committed champion for stronger ethics laws and a government as good and honest as its people. He has fought for limits on lobbyist gifts to legislators. He pushed stricter rules on conflict of interest in Georgia's General Assembly, and for a stronger, broader Open Records Act. He's been named one of Georgia's Most Influential People by James Magazine and a "Star to Watch" by the National Journal's Hotline.

Cobb Democratic Women: "An Evening in the Daylily Garden" -- A great success!

Beverly McMurray, of CDW, submitted a fine set of photos from the Cobb Democratic Women's May 30th event, "An Evening in the Daylily Garden". She also submitted accurate cutlines for all the photos. Unfortunately, it's impossible to place a cutline under a photo on this blog without creating a separate post & title for each picture. With a little attention to detail, I think our clever GFDW members can figure out which descriptions apply to which photos! (Tina)

A TRIBUTE TO BETH PERERA

Members of MGDWC are surely going to miss our departing president, who also served on the Houston County Democratic Committee and the board of the Georgia Federation of Democratic Women. She did us honor as a club president, as a candidate for the Georgia House of Representatives, and as a delegate to the 200 Democratic National Convention. She also put in plenty of volunteer hours for other Democratic causes, such as the booth at the Georgia National Fair and the Obama campaign. Beth gave generously of her self, her time, and her resources to advance Democratic causes here and state-wide. We wish her the best of luck and happiness in Vermont, and I bet that within two weeks of her arrival there everyone within a hundred mile radius will be proud owners of a new item of Pampered Chef cookware! Good luck, Beth!
We will miss you!

A Visit to Richmond County, March 21

Kristina Simms enjoyed a breakfast visit with the Richmond County Democratic Committee on Saturday, March 21, at the Holiday Inn in Augusta. Tina got to meet and talk with Sheila Hightower-Allen, who has expressed interest in "taking up names" for a chapter of GFDW in the Augusta area, and Lowell Greenbaum, chair of Richmond County Democrats. Tina couldn't stay long because of participating in a conference at another location, but we have high hopes of re-starting a Democratic Women's Club in that area.

YES, WE DID !

Those of us who didn't go to Washington still had the thrill of seeing our new President and our beautiful new First Lady go through a day of wonderful events.
Not quite like being there, for sure....but maybe warmer !

GFDW Fall meeting in Cobb County was a big success!

Thanks to Cobb County Democratic Women -- Beverly McMurray, Connie Taylor, and all the other super ladies from Cobb --- for arranging an excellent state meeting on Saturday, Nov. 8. Because of the Democratic victory on Nov. 4, spirits were high.
"Uncle Sam" was standing on a nearby street corner waving us in the right direction.
And when we arrived at the South Cobb Community Center, who did we see but Lady Liberty herself standing by the entrance to greet us! Keynote speaker Michael Thurmond, who heads the Ga. Department of Labor, inspired us with his vision for Democrats in Georgia. In line with the theme, "America the Blue-tiful," Mr. Thurmond told us that HIS Georgia was BLUE---and all of us who gathered there for the Fall State Meeting of GFDW shared his enthusiasm. A great lunch was served, and other features of the event were presentation of new officers, True Blue Awards, a silent auction, and drawing for beautiful baskets and for a hand-made necklace.
Full details will be sent out in the minutes, and a separate post regarding the new officers will be placed on the Grapevine after the Spring 2009 meeting Meanwhile --- enjoy a sampling of photos from the gala event. YES WE DID ! WONDERFUL VICTORY FOR OBAMA-BIDEN !

We'd got a great new president-elect in Barack Obama...and a great new vice president-elect in Joe Biden ! There was so much hard work done in Georgia by Obama volunteers and other enthusiastic Democrats.
But let's not rest ! If there is a run-off between Saxby Chambliss (R) and Jim Martin (D), or in the PSC race between Jim Powell and Lauren McDonald, we must push to get out the vote.
Looking ahead to a bright blue future for Georgia...

WE CAN WIN
IN 2010 !

i-report from Perry GA !

Although I already voted early I went to Rozar Park (polling place) in Perry just to see how things were going. Lots of cars, lots of people, movement in and out was going very efficiently. And -- I met some new friends who were happily waving Obama signs at the entrance to the park.

Directions

Address of the South Cobb Community Center is 620 Lions Club Drive, Mableton GA 30126.

From whatever direction you are coming toward Atlanta, get on I-285 and come around to the west side. Take exit 12, Bankhead Highway (between I-20 exit 10 and Bolton Road exit 13). [PLEASE NOTE THAT BANKHEAD HWY IS NOW CALLED HOLLOWELL PKY. The name has changed. Even so, the name change may not be not yet be in place on Mapquest and other "trip" sites.]
Go toward the west away from Atlanta. After the street crosses the Chattahoochee River (from Fulton into Cobb County), the street will change names from Bankhead Highway [now HOLLOWELL PKWY] to Veteran’s Memorial Highway. A little over 5 miles after exiting I-285, you will arrive at Lions Club Drive/Moss Drive on the right. There may be a sign there for “Lions Park”. Turn right and the Community Center will be on your left in about a block. We are working on having “Uncle Sam” standing on Veteran’s Memorial Drive so that you don’t miss the turn. We are also working on having the “Statue of Liberty” standing at the entrance to the Community Center to welcome everyone to the parking lot and answer questions.
